I was invited to be Formulate’s beta user back in June 2018, and that means I got to be one of the first people to try Formulate. Let’s learn a bit about the brand and make sure to enter my giveaway at the end of this post.
Formulate is a fully customized shampoo and conditioner manufacturer, founded by Osmaan (aka Ooz) – the visionary and coder, Chris – the AI specialist, and Tammy – the chemist. Their purpose behind Formulate is to create not ‘just ok’ or ‘the best so far’ but the best formulation for YOUR hair! These people are truly passionate about creating hair care products that are for each individual, not the masses. Abby is the loveliest woman I’ve been working with from the start, from email updates to get back with answers to any of my hair questions during the trial period over the past 2 months.
I have a short bob, finer but thick hair, especially at the back of my head. Most of the time, I purposely avoid using conditioner because I want to keep it somewhat voluminous and not so soft and flat. This is to avoid the use of unnecessary styling products that potentially irritate my scalp since that is the main concern when it comes of haircare for me. In the winter, my scalp gets so dry and tight, and I’d watch flakes coming off of my head as I scratch it. Some said I need to apply conditioner even on my roots since it is so dry. I know that I have stayed away from bleaching or applying any harsh chemicals to my hair in the past 6 months.
My first set of shampoo and conditioner which came formulated based on my ‘hair wizard’ quiz results did not work for me. I took the hair quiz and specifically emphasized the fact that my scalp was itchy and flaky. The scent I picked out did not smell as I had hoped for either. It was the tidal scent which was a combo of the sea, warm sand, and coconut. I wish I got something mintier and more refreshing instead as my scalp felt like it needed. Abby was kindly passed my concern to Tammy, the chemist, and they reformulated a new batch for me. She also suggested me the Green Envy scent with green tea and honey. It was a lot of people’s favorites, and I immediately said yes for the opportunity to try it again.
The second batch came in another nicely packaged box, just like the first one. I was so thrilled and gave it a try right away on the same day. It magically calmed my irritated scalp and significantly reduced the flakiness I had been experiencing. I could tell and feel the difference the next day! Plus the scent was so nice. It smells like a really yummy concoction of tea and honey, but I think it smells more like jasmine flower. I don’t know! It’s hard to explain, but it’s a really unique floral-y scent which is probably one of my favorites out of many shampoo scents I’ve tried recently.
I brought Formulate with me to New York and subsequent travel trips, and I had to be honest with you that I still experienced the itchy and dry scalp, at some levels, but much less than other shampoos I tried. I did get back to Abby and updated her with the progress, not so aggressively different but we’re getting there! I’m glad that Formulate has been such a dream brand to work with as they’re the most patient and not-so-demanding for content right away. I wanted to start this giveaway before the holidays as a thank-you to you guys for following along even though this is not a 100% omg-I-love-it kind of review. But I can guarantee you that Formulate will assist and make sure you’re one happy customer.
Can we stop for a second and acknowledge the bottle design and packaging? Say hello to the future of chic bathtub!
Formulate is kindly offering a pair of shampoo and conditioner for one of you (450 ml each, formulated just for you and for your hair needs and concerns). Again, you will be asked to take the ‘hair wizard’ quiz and choose the scent of your choice. I think you will love the Green Envy scent just as much as I do.
The giveaway ends January 6, 2019. One lucky winner will receive a set of customized shampoo and conditioner. Formulate will email the winner a code to redeem their prize. Non-winning entries will receive a $5 off coupon code.
